Some October Things & Cafe Reviews [Pittsburgh: South Hills Edition]

Apple picking, drive in the Pittsburgh suburbs, trying out #2 cafe of Pittsburgh, rekindling with some people.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), based on geography and the flora and fauna in the state, “Pennsylvania has a longer and more varied fall foliage season than any other state in the nation -- or anywhere in the world.”

Of course, as a Pennsylvanian and the lover of all things fall, I couldn’t just stay home do nothing. So I put on my mask, booked a zipcar, and did some exploring.

Uptown Coffee

723 Washington Rd

THis was my second cafe stop (or should I say, “hop”) after my visit to Carnegie Coffee Company during my drive in the South Hills (Mt Lebanon area). Thanks to my former professor for his socially-distant hospitality at his home earlier, him and his wife recommended Uptown - specifically, their cookies and chai. As you’ll see in the vlog later, cookies definitely seemed to be one of their specialties. Upon the recommendation of the barista I got a nutmeg cookie and pumpkin spice chai, both of which were delicious! Really held up to Prof. Caspar’s expectations. No indoor seating, but did have amply tables outside. (It was also a really beautiful day that day) But from the looks of it, it seems it would’ve been a nice spot to relax and/or be productive pre-COVID indoors.

Rating:

  • Coffee: N/A - Chai isn’t coffee!

  • Environment: 9/10

  • Consistency: N/A - first visit

Overall: 9.5/10 ***

***+0.5 with the cookie!

Orbis Caffe

675 Washington Rd

Couple yards next to Uptown Coffee, they did have indoor seating (it was quite spacious too), and quite the European vibe? Anyhow, had I gone here first I would’ve definitely sat down for a bit and had a coffee as well. However, given my zipcar reservation was running out of time & I literally had my Uptown drink and cookie in hand but having been in the area already, I opted for a hot apple cider and breakfast burrito. I know I totally shortcame on them by not getting a coffee or something more elaborate, but that just means something for a next visit! xD
